I stopped driving after dark at 62. It took me eight months to find out why.

Nobody at the appointment used the word that would have explained it. I had to go and find the study myself.

There is a two-mile stretch between the last stoplight and my turn-off with no street lamps on it. I have driven it for twenty-one years. Last November I pulled onto the shoulder in the middle of it, put the hazards on, and sat there until my eyes came back.

A car had come the other way. Nothing unusual, nothing fast. Its headlights arrived as two enormous white flowers that filled the whole windshield, and for about four seconds afterwards I could not see the edge of the road. Not dimly. Not at all.

I knew where the edge was because I have driven it for twenty-one years, and that is the only reason I stayed on the blacktop.

When I told my daughter, she said the headlights are all like that now, everyone says so. She is right that everyone says so. What she did not know is that the recovery afterwards had been getting longer for about two years, and I had been quietly rearranging my life around it.

What everyone told me it was

My optometrist was pleasant about it. She checked my prescription, adjusted it very slightly, and told me that modern LED headlights are much harsher than the old halogen ones, which is true. She recommended an anti-reflective coating. Then she said the sentence I have since heard from three other people in that profession, which is that this sort of thing is just part of getting older.

I want to be fair to her. She was not being dismissive and she was not wrong about the headlights. But the conversation ended there, and I left with a quote for coatings and no explanation of why the recovery had changed. Everyone wanted to talk about the light coming in. Nobody wanted to talk about what happens after it stops.

Everything I bought first

I am putting this list in because I would have found it useful, and because it is the honest order I did things in rather than the order that makes me look sensible.

That is somewhere near $200 and about two years. Every one of those purchases felt specific and grown-up at the time. Every one of them was aimed at the light arriving at my eye, and not one of them touched the thing that had actually changed.

The study almost nobody gets shown

It is called the Alienor study, run in Bordeaux. Not a laboratory and not mice. Ordinary older people, mean age near eighty, followed over years. What they measured was esterified 3-hydroxy fatty acids in blood, used as a proxy for how much bacterial endotoxin a body is carrying.

Their finding, published in Investigative Ophthalmology & Visual Science: participants with higher levels of that marker had a higher rate of developing early age-related macular degeneration. The hazard ratio was 1.21 for each standard deviation of increase, and it held after adjusting for age and sex.

Here is the other half, because a page that only quotes the flattering number does not deserve to be believed. The same study found no significant association with advanced macular degeneration. The authors say plainly that only randomized clinical trials can prove that one thing causes the other. This is an association in one cohort of very old French adults. It is not proof.

But it reframed the question for me permanently. I had spent two years and two hundred dollars treating the light going in. I had never once considered what might be arriving at the back of the eye from the inside.

What I finally tried

So I went looking for a formula built around that idea instead of the usual eye vitamins.

Most eye supplements are the same short list, and I had already been through it: lutein, zeaxanthin, zinc, a lot of vitamin E. All of it aimed squarely at the eye. The one I ended up taking has twenty-two ingredients, and the eye half of that list is unremarkable.

The part that made me buy it is the other four. Grape seed extract, rutin, quercetin and taurine, which are there for the gut barrier rather than the retina, alongside alpha lipoic acid. It is the only formula I found that had read the same literature I had.

Where I actually am now

I have been taking it since February, and I want to be careful here, because the reviews that made me trust this category at all were never the ones claiming a miracle.

In March I drove home from my sister's at nine at night, on the unlit road, and did not plan it in advance or dread it beforehand. In May I said yes to dinner at eight without running the arithmetic on sunset first. Those are small sentences. They are the true ones.

What I notice most is the absence of a thing. For two years I was adding a new avoidance every few months — a road, an hour, an invitation. I have not added one since the winter.

“Is this one of those miracle pills?” That is exactly what I thought too.

I have been on this earth long enough to have my guard up. So before I say where to read the rest, let me say plainly what this is not.

Read a hundred reviews of any eye supplement and count how many people say they can see better. Almost none. What they say is that it has not got worse. After two years of watching it get worse on a schedule, that turned out to be the thing I actually wanted.
