Don't wait until it's bad enough to mention; there's an explanation now.

I kept waiting until it got bad enough to mention. The trouble is, that line keeps moving. I've already pushed the appointment twice.
I closed the notebook and put it in the drawer. Not on the counter. If he saw a list of names he would ask, and I wasn't ready for that conversation.
I watched my mother lose track of her own week. The calendar moved to someone else's fridge. Other people drove her. I swore I would never put anyone in that position. I did not expect the first step to look like a private note about who could drive.
Saying it out loud makes it a family project. I wanted it to stay mine a while longer. A stronger pair is a story he can live with. The notebook is not.
I don't need a speech and I don't need a miracle. I want to keep driving, keep showing up, and not become the person everyone has to plan around.
I've already pushed the appointment twice. There is no week that announces itself as the right one. You just pick a Tuesday or you don't.
I'm not asking you to become a patient tonight. I'm asking whether you've started doing that quiet math, and whether anyone has given you a picture that isn't just another pair of glasses.
Who's free on Tuesdays. Who still drives at night. Who wouldn't make it feel like a favor. You can do all of that without ever using the word burden, which is how it stays a secret even from yourself.
Here is what had already failed, in the order I tried them:
- Saying nothing and hoping it levels off
- Booking the eye test, then moving it
- Reading about macular change late at night
- Letting him think it is only the glasses
Those are the moves of someone trying to stay the person who helps. They buy time. They do not keep the notebook from existing.

What if staying useful isn't only a glasses problem?
Figure · the barrier

There is a wall around the back of the eye, and something from the gut that may not stay on its side. I cannot prove that. It is the first account that made the notebook make sense.
What people do with that account is one capsule a day, with food. I wanted that question in a real appointment before I kept rearranging other people's weeks in my head.
Ask at the next visit whether anyone in that room thinks about a connection between the gut and the eye.
If you have already written down a name, try it for sixty days and see.
